This course builds on students' previous experience with functions and their developing understanding of rates of change. Students will solve problems involving geometric and algebraic representations of vectors and representations of lines and planes in three-dimensional space; broaden their understanding of rates of change to include the derivatives of polynomial, sinusoidal, exponential, rational, and radical functions; and apply these concepts and skills to the modelling of real-world relationships. Students will also refine their use of the mathematical processes necessary for success in senior mathematics. This course is intended for students who choose to pursue careers in fields such as science, engineering, economics, and some areas of business, including those students who will be required to take a university-level calculus, linear algebra, or physics course. AP Calculus (MCV4UO) is different from CAlculus and Vectors MCV4U1 in that, this course involves a comprehensive study of the differential and integral calculus. The concepts of limits and continuity are analyzed as the basis for the study of the calculus. A balance is maintained between theory, applications, and manipulative techniques. Included are the concepts of differentiation of elementary and transcendental functions, differentials, and the definite integral, techniques of integration, series and differential equations. The AB Calculus syllabus of the Advanced Placement Examination is satisfied and students are expected to take the AP exam . Due to the fact that Advanced Placement courses involve studying material that is the equivalent to work at a first year university level, it is advised that students with strong work habits and a real aptitude for the subject material consider AP courses. Prerequisite: Note 1: Advanced Functions, Grade 12, University Preparation, must be taken prior to Calculus and Vectors. Note 2:80% or above in Advanced Functions, Grade 12 (MHF4U1), Pre-AP and approval of Pre-AP Application. 75% or above in Advanced Functions, Grade 12, Pre-AP (MHF4U3) |
